The Devil card description

What's on the card

Baphomet, half man and half goat, with bat wings and an inverted pentagram on his forehead, sits above a chained man and woman. Two serpents twist at his abdomen. His right hand points two fingers up, and his left holds a torch downward, lighting the man's tail. The couple are growing horns and tails: hers is a grapevine, his is on fire. Their chains hang loose around their necks.

The Devil card
From the Terror Tarot guidebook

The Devil, in our words

Baphomet, depicted here as half-man-half-goat, represents the balance between antipodes: good and evil, positive and negative, human and animal. At his abdomen are two entwined serpents — one male and one female, further underlining the figure as a symbol of equivalence. The Devil’s wings are modeled after the vampire bat — a creature known to suck the life-blood from its victims. This symbolizes the effects of succumbing fully to one’s primal desires and emotions. His gaze entices us, drawing us nearer as we surrender to his grasp. The inverted pentagram on his forehead is a sign meant to attract sinister forces as it reverses the proper order of the world. Baphomet points two fingers heavenward using his right hand and holds a torch downward with his left hand, lighting the man’s tail. As a result, the dictum “as above, so below,” and the idea of duality is emblazoned within this card.

A man and woman stand beneath the beast as they begin to show animalistic signs of change, as seen in their horns and tails. The woman’s tail is made of a grapevine, which represents pleasure, while the man’s tail is inflamed, which represents lust. They are seemingly held prisoner by The Devil; but upon further inspection, their chains are loosely hung around their necks and are feasibly removable. This shows how we often imprison ourselves and have the power to control our own destinies. Although it may be easy to feel a sense of fear when drawing this card, do not distress. It can mean a myriad of things, often which can be positive, when seen in the context of our readings.

▲ Upright

The Devil upright meaning

LoveIntense attraction, obsession, or a bond that feels impossible to leave.
CareerGolden handcuffs, a toxic workplace, or chasing money over meaning.
MoneyDebt, compulsive spending, or being ruled by material wants.
FeelingsObsession, desire, entrapment
ActionAcknowledge the chain. Name the addiction.

Upright in love

In a love reading, The Devil burns hot. It can show powerful chemistry and passion, but also jealousy, control, or a relationship you stay in because walking away feels impossible. Look at the couple beneath Baphomet: their chains hang loose, and still they don't move. Ask whether this bond is freely chosen, or whether habit, fear or desire is doing the choosing for you.

Upright in career

At work, The Devil often appears as golden handcuffs: a paycheck too good to leave in a job that is eating you alive. It can also point to workaholism, office politics, or bending your values for status. The torch lights the man's tail while he looks away. Notice what you've been tolerating, and remember that you can still walk out.

Upright in money

Financially, The Devil warns of debt, gambling, shopping sprees and the trap of always wanting more. Credit and quick pleasures can feel like freedom until the chain tightens. Track where your money truly goes, and name any pattern that has stopped being a choice. Once you see it clearly, you can begin to slip free.

As feelings

They feel obsession, desire and entrapment. They are drawn to you powerfully, perhaps more than is healthy, and may feel unable to pull away even when they want to.

As an action

Acknowledge the chain. Name the addiction. A person shown by The Devil gives in to cravings, chases instant pleasure, and keeps returning to what they know harms them.

▼ Reversed

The Devil reversed meaning

LoveBreaking free from a toxic tie, or reclaiming yourself in a relationship.
CareerLeaving a job that held you captive, or setting firm limits at work.
MoneyPaying down debt and breaking a costly habit. Freedom is close.
FeelingsLiberation, clarity, relief
ActionShed what no longer resonates. Reclaim your power.

Reversed in love

Reversed, The Devil is often a welcome sight. It shows you lifting the chain from your neck: leaving a controlling partner, ending an obsession, or rebuilding a relationship on honest ground. You may see a pattern clearly for the first time. Old cravings could still tug at you, so stay watchful, but the power has shifted back into your hands.

Reversed in career

In career readings, the reversed Devil marks a release from whatever held you captive. You might quit a draining job, stand up to a manipulative boss, or stop working nights and weekends just to prove your worth. Freedom may come with less money or certainty at first. It is still worth more than the chain.

Reversed in money

Reversed, this card points to financial recovery. You are paying off debt, cancelling what kept you spending, or facing a gambling or shopping habit head on. Detaching from the need for more brings real relief. Keep going, and guard against the urge to reward your progress with the very habit you escaped.

As feelings

They feel liberation, clarity and relief. Something that had a grip on them has loosened, and they are seeing the situation, and themselves, far more clearly.

As an action

Shed what no longer resonates. Reclaim your power. Someone in this position breaks old habits, sets boundaries, and walks away from what once controlled them.
