The Moon, in our words

In our interpretation of The Moon, a werewolf straddles a stream of water in the midst of transformation. This imagery, as well as his position over the rill, represents both the domesticated and wild characteristics of the mind. He bestrides the line between his disciplined humanity and his beastly urges. In the sky above, a full moon shines bright. The cratered face of a jack-o-lantern watches over the conflicted creature, acting as a symbol of the unconscious mind and intuition. Because the moon’s light is dimmer than that of the sun’s, it can only illuminate the path to higher consciousness. This is represented by the waterway that winds between the two twisted trees — the same ones that are pictured in Death. These interwoven structures of nature signify the polarizing forces of good and evil, but their similar appearances suggest a difficulty in distinguishing between them as we move forward on the pathway to elevated thought.

In the foreground, a small crab edges its way from a pool of water. This symbolizes the developing stages of consciousness and the beginnings of moving toward a state of higher understanding.
