The Sun card description

What's on the card

A witch's altar on a wooden table, set for poppet magick. A large sun face is carved into the wood, surrounded by four sunflowers, four skulls, and two melting white candles. Below lies a stitched poppet with blue button eyes, a smile, and an exposed heart, with a noose, a dagger, and pins nearby.

From the Terror Tarot guidebook

The Sun, in our words

The Sun radiates a sensation of positivity and fulfillment. A witch’s altar is on display, prepped for poppet magick. Often seen as a negative force, poppet magick can be performed sympathetically and used to bring forth health, love, prosperity, and protection. Carved into the wood, The Sun’s scale and placement on the altar exhibits its essentiality to all living beings. It is a symbol of the light that shadows even the darkest nights. Situated below the carving, four sunflowers are carefully arranged. The flowers’ genus implies a direct correlation with The Sun. They are frequently used in magick for their glowing energy and connection to the root chakra. The number of sunflowers correlate to the four elements while the quantity of skulls corresponds to the four suits of the Minor Arcana. The skulls’ employment in this scene represents the renewed usage of those whose purpose had previously come to an end. Directly above, the melting white candle wax highlights a theme of purity as the flickering candlelight glow reflects off the various objects assorted on the table, alluding to the sunlight’s influence on all things. Underneath, we see a poppet — its body unmarred and clean. The doll’s stitched cheerful expression and blue eyes signify its innocence and purity. It is a depiction of the happiness and joy that blossoms from being in tune with our inner-selves. Its outstretched arms and exposed heart symbolize its vulnerability and openness. With seemingly nothing to hide or fear, the poppet’s childlike naivete peers through.

This card is a bringer of truth, as represented by the threatening implements that proximate the stuffed doll. Though the truth can be a difficult, painful burden to bear, we should always seek enlightenment rather than be left in the dark.

▲ Upright

The Sun upright meaning

Love	Warm, happy love. Joy shared openly, and a relationship that feels easy and bright.
Career	Success and recognition. Your work shines and others notice.
Money	Abundance and stability. A good time to enjoy the rewards you've earned.
Feelings	Joy, warmth, radiant confidence
Action	Celebrate. Share your light freely.

Upright in love

In love, The Sun is one of the happiest cards you can draw. Like the poppet with its arms flung wide and its heart on the outside, you are ready to love openly, with nothing to hide. Couples may celebrate a milestone such as moving in, an engagement or a new arrival. If you are single, your confidence is magnetic right now, so let yourself be seen.

Upright in career

For your career, The Sun signals success that is plain for all to see: a promotion, a project that lands well, or praise you've worked hard for. Your energy is high, and like the carved sun lighting every object on the altar, your mood lifts the people around you. Share credit generously and enjoy the moment. You've earned it.

Upright in money

Money matters look bright under The Sun. Bills get paid, savings grow, and a risk you took may finally pay off. The four sunflowers stand for steady growth rooted in the earth, so let some of this good fortune build your foundation. Treat yourself, then set something aside for the seasons when the light is lower.

As feelings

Glowing with joy, warmth and radiant confidence. They feel genuinely happy around you and aren't afraid to show it.

As an action

Celebrate. Share your light freely. A person shown by The Sun is generous, upbeat and open. They lift the room just by walking into it.

▼ Reversed

The Sun reversed meaning

Love	Joy feels dimmed. Burnout, unrealistic hopes, or a need to care for your inner child.
Career	Running on empty, or too optimistic about a plan. Rest before you push on.
Money	Overconfidence or overspending. Look at the numbers with clear eyes.
Feelings	Exhaustion, dimness, childlike vulnerability
Action	Reconnect with joy. Rest and replenish.

Reversed in love

Reversed, The Sun suggests the warmth in your love life is still there but harder to feel. Stress, exhaustion or old childhood wounds may be dimming your joy, or you may be seeing a partner through a naive, rose-tinted glow. The exposed heart on the poppet reminds you that openness needs care. Rest, be gentle with yourself, and talk honestly about what you need.

Reversed in career

In a career reading, the reversed Sun can mean burnout after giving too much for too long, or a project that looked brilliant on paper but was built on wishful thinking. Success is still within reach, but you need to recharge first. Take a break, check your assumptions, and remember what made you love this work in the first place.

Reversed in money

Financially, this card reversed warns against assuming the good times will last forever. Overspending, a blind spot in your budget, or trusting a deal too easily can drain your reserves. The pins and dagger on the altar are a reminder that truth is sharp but useful. Face the real figures, cut back where you must, and rebuild gently.

As feelings

They feel exhaustion, dimness and childlike vulnerability. They want to feel happy again but are worn out, and may be more fragile than they let on.

As an action

Reconnect with joy. Rest and replenish. Someone under the reversed Sun may withdraw to recharge, or cling to a sunny outlook that ignores real problems.
