From the Terror Tarot guidebook

The Magician, in our words

The Magician is the bearer of new beginnings, manifestation or manipulation, and empowered actions or untapped potential. We felt that the narrative and imagery of this particular card would best be illustrated by the timeless tale of Dr. Frankenstein. After all, in Mary Shelley’s famous legend, the titular character manipulates the natural laws of science and morality to bend the will of life and death to his own design.

This card is aptly labeled with the number one, which represents commencement and the introduction of opportunity. The image shows our subject standing in his laboratory. Before him, we see the lifeless figure of his infamous monster as he unwittingly awaits reanimation. The monster is the manifestation of Dr. Frankenstein’s goals and ideas coming to fruition through his abilities, persistence, and resourcefulness. Behind him, we see the Tesla coils create an electrical arc in the shape of an infinity symbol above his head, alluding to the doctor’s unlimited potential. On the wall behind him hang two shelves that hold various objects, four of which carry significance to this deck. The bat, pumpkin, goblet, and candle symbolize air, earth, water, and fire respectively. The inclusion of all four elements is crucial to establishing that The Magician is equipped with all the necessary tools he needs to bring forth change.

Furthermore, his body language is of consequence here. Notice how one arm extends toward the heavens while the other directs our attention to the monster beneath him. This position signifies the aphorism, “As above, so below.” It is this relationship between the metaphysical and physical realms that greatly aids The Magician in his quest to ignite change both within himself and in his worldly circumstances. He is a balancing force, uniting these two planes toward a common purpose.

Regardless of where or how this card occurs in our readings, we can be sure that it is a sign of action, willpower, and change in our lives.

▲ Upright

The Magician upright meaning

Love	Confident pursuit. You have the charm and focus to make a connection real.
Career	Skills, tools and timing line up. Launch the project or ask for the role.
Money	Resourcefulness pays. Put what you already have to work and it can grow.
Feelings	Confidence, focus, determination
Action	Create. Command. Manifest.

Upright in love

In a love reading, The Magician says you already hold everything needed to create the relationship you want. If you are single, this is a time to make the first move with real confidence instead of wishing from a distance. If you are partnered, put intention behind the romance, the way the doctor channels lightning into his creation. Say clearly what you want. Words and actions together are what bring love to life.

Upright in career

For career, The Magician is a strong green light. Like Dr. Frankenstein surrounded by coils, switches and shelves of supplies, you are better equipped than you think. This is the moment to pitch the idea, launch the business or show what you can do. Skill and willpower are on your side, but the monster on the table only wakes if someone throws the switch.

Upright in money

Financially, The Magician favors initiative. A side project, a new skill or a smarter use of what you already own could turn into income. The bat, pumpkin, goblet and candle on the shelves remind you that you are not starting from nothing. Take stock of your resources, make a plan, and put your money to work with purpose.

As feelings

Full of confidence, focus and determination. They know what they want from this connection and believe they can make it happen.

As an action

Create. Command. Manifest. A person shown by The Magician takes charge and turns ideas into results, using every tool within reach.

▼ Reversed

The Magician reversed meaning

Love	Charm without sincerity, mind games, or a partner who is not what they seem.
Career	Talent wasted, plans stalled, or someone overpromising and underdelivering.
Money	Schemes that sound too good, or resources slipping through your fingers.
Feelings	Doubt, deception, confusion
Action	Reassess. Redirect. Recommit.

Reversed in love

Reversed, The Magician can warn of manipulation in love: someone saying all the right things for the wrong reasons, or a romance built on illusion. It can also point to you, holding back from what you want or trying to steer a partner instead of being honest. Dr. Frankenstein bent nature to his will and paid dearly for it. Real connection cannot be engineered.

Reversed in career

In career readings, the reversed Magician suggests skills going unused, ideas that never leave the table, or energy spent in the wrong direction. Watch for colleagues or offers that promise more than they deliver. If you have been scattered, choose one project and see it through. If you have been doubting yourself, remember the coils are still charged.

Reversed in money

With money, this reversed card cautions against get-rich-quick pitches, slick salespeople and plans built on wishful thinking. It can also show squandered opportunity: money or talent that could have grown but was left idle. Check every claim carefully, protect your accounts, and redirect your resources toward one clear goal.

As feelings

They feel doubt, deception and confusion. They may suspect something is being hidden, or be unsure whether their own intentions are pure.

As an action

Reassess. Redirect. Recommit. Someone in this position may be scheming, bluffing, or letting real ability go to waste.
