The Hermit card description

What's on the card

An ancient, hooded ferryman stands alone in a boat on a river at night, holding a green lantern in his right hand and a staff in his left. Skeletal hands reach up from the water toward him. The guide pairs him with a Dante quote: "Hope not ever to see Heaven. I have come to lead you to the other shore."

The Hermit, in our words

In The Hermit, an ancient, hooded being stands alone in a boat as he glides across a river. Seen here as a psychopomp to the afterlife, The Hermit has achieved spiritual mastery and acts as a guide to those seeking higher knowledge and understanding than can be found within the material plane. He stands unwavering within his vessel, aware of where he is headed. He sets a clear destination for himself and is committed to the path on which he has chosen. In his right hand, representing the conscious mind, he holds a lantern, displaying his vast wisdom and forethought. As he moves along the river, the lantern lights his path, but only so far; he knows he must make calculated decisions when planning a course further than his lantern’s light can reach. In his left hand, representing the subconscious mind, he holds a staff, symbolizing inner strength. The staff is a sign of his power, authority, and dependability, which he uses to balance himself through the rough waters of his journey. Though the currents may shift and change, The Hermit remains steady.

Rising from the water, we see the skeletal hands of those who have been lost to the river that lies between the world of the living and the dead. They reach for The Hermit, eager for assistance and guidance, further highlighting his achievements in regards to metaphysical enlightenment. Even still, he remains in solitude. He is an introverted figure who is best nurtured by quiet reflection, meditation, and self-care.

▲ Upright

The Hermit upright meaning

Love	Time alone to learn what you truly want, or a partner who needs space.
Career	Seeking meaningful work, studying deeply, or finding a wise mentor.
Money	Simple living and careful choices. Spend on what truly matters.
Feelings	Contemplation, peace, inner clarity
Action	Withdraw. Reflect. Trust your inner lantern.

Upright in love

The Hermit in a love reading often asks you to step back from the crowd. If you are single, this can be a season to know yourself before you share your heart, and that solitude will make your next connection deeper. In a relationship, one of you may need room to think. Space doesn't have to mean distance. Like Charon's lantern, a little quiet light can show you both what matters.

Upright in career

In a career reading, The Hermit tarot card points to work that has meaning, not just a paycheck. You may be questioning your path, studying a craft in depth, or working best on your own. This card can also bring a mentor, or ask you to become one. Plan with care: the lantern only lights so far, so think a few strokes ahead.

Upright in money

Financially, The Hermit favors a quiet, simple approach. It is a good time to review your budget alone, cut what you don't need, and ask whether your spending reflects your values. Big flashy purchases aren't favored here. Steady thinking and modest choices carry you safely across.

As feelings

Wrapped in contemplation, peace and inner clarity. They feel a need to think things over on their own before they are ready to share what they've found.

As an action

Withdraw. Reflect. Trust your inner lantern. A person shown by The Hermit pulls back to reflect. They seek answers inward and move only when they are sure.

▼ Reversed

The Hermit reversed meaning

Love	Loneliness, shutting a partner out, or finally ready to open up again.
Career	Isolated at work, or ready to step back out and share what you know.
Money	Avoiding your finances, or so frugal it costs you joy and connection.
Feelings	Loneliness, disconnection, readiness to return
Action	Re-emerge. Seek connection. Share your wisdom.

Reversed in love

Reversed, The Hermit can show solitude that has turned into loneliness. You or your partner may be withdrawing so far that the other person feels shut out. If you have been single by choice, this card can also signal that your time alone has done its work and you are ready to come back to shore. Let someone in and share the light you found.

Reversed in career

In career readings, the reversed Hermit may point to isolation: working alone too long, feeling unseen, or cut off from the team. It can also mark a comeback. After a long stretch of study or reflection, you are ready to rejoin the world and put your knowledge to use. Reach out, collaborate, and let others see what you can do.

Reversed in money

Reversed, this card warns against hiding from your money problems or refusing every bit of advice. It can also point to frugality taken too far, where saving every coin leaves no room for living. Ask for guidance, open the statements, and find a balance between care and enjoyment.

As feelings

They feel lonely, disconnected and ready to return. They may miss you more than they let on, and are quietly finding their way back.

As an action

Re-emerge. Seek connection. Share your wisdom. Someone in this position may be hiding away, or slowly reaching out after a long time on their own.
