Justice card description

What's on the card

The Grim Reaper sits on a throne between two pillars, with a tattered purple veil hanging between them. He holds a double-edged scythe upright in his right hand and an hourglass on a chain in his left. An owl perches on his shoulder, one bony foot shows beneath his robe, and his face is hidden in his hood.

Justice card
From the Terror Tarot guidebook

Justice, in our words

The figure of Justice is personified by the Grim Reaper, the final impartial dispatcher of mortal justice to all who roam the Earth. He is a symbol of death, but he is not the decision-maker. He does the bidding of the universe, coming for souls only when their time on Earth is finished. He is a blind metaphor of the universal law and order of life and death.

He sits on a throne that is bound by two pillars, similar to the ones seen in The High Priestess and The Hierophant. These columns stand for balance and structure. Draped between them is a tattered purple veil. The color purple signifies compassion, though its tattered state ensures a focus on objectivity. In his right hand, he holds a double-edged scythe. This represents symmetry, logic, and the ideology that all of our actions carry consequences. He holds the scythe upwards to express finality. In his left hand, he grips the chain of an hourglass as the sand inside continues to fall, displaying his impartiality and inevitability. An owl sits over his left shoulder, complementing the reaper’s emotional detachment with intuition and wisdom. On the owl’s chest lies a white marking in the shape of a square symbolizing thoughts that are well-ordered and clear. Below his robes, the angel of death reveals one of his bony, white feet, showing the divine repercussions of our actions. Offsetting this, the reaper’s face is hidden in the shadow of his hood as these consequences are often revealed at times unbeknownst to us. The colors of this scene reflect the arguably cold nature of this card’s neutrality.

Justice upright meaning

LoveHonesty, fairness and give-and-take. A relationship in balance.
CareerFair outcomes, contracts in your favor, and integrity that gets noticed.
MoneyBalanced books, fair deals, and a legal or financial matter settled justly.
FeelingsClarity, accountability, calm resolve
ActionAct with integrity. Accept accountability.

Upright in love

In a love reading, Justice asks for honesty on both sides. A healthy relationship here is one where effort, trust and respect flow equally. If something has been out of balance, this card says the truth will come out and things can be set right. It can also point to a commitment made official, such as a marriage. Singles will attract what they offer, so be the partner you hope to find.

Upright in career

The Justice tarot card in a career reading points to fair results for honest work. Contracts, negotiations and legal matters should go your way if you have acted with integrity. Decisions made now carry weight, so weigh the facts like the reaper weighs each soul: calmly, objectively and without favor. Accountability is your strongest tool.

Upright in money

Financially, Justice is about balance and fairness. Pay what you owe, read every agreement, and keep clear records. A settlement, refund or legal matter may be resolved fairly. Like the double-edged scythe, your choices cut both ways, so the effort you put into your finances now will come back to you.

As feelings

They feel clear-headed, accountable and calmly resolved. They want things to be fair between you and are ready to be honest about what they think.

As an action

Act with integrity. Accept accountability. A person shown by Justice weighs the facts before acting. They own their choices and treat others evenly.

▼ Reversed

Justice reversed meaning

LoveDishonesty, blame, or one partner giving far more than the other.
CareerUnfair treatment, shady dealings, or dodging responsibility for a mistake.
MoneyDisputes, unpaid debts, or a deal that isn't what it seems.
FeelingsGuilt, evasion, imbalance
ActionRestore balance. Stop avoiding consequences.

Reversed in love

Reversed, Justice suggests that something in the relationship isn't fair or isn't true. There may be secrets, blame shifting, or one person carrying all the weight. It can also mean you are avoiding a conversation you know you need to have. The reaper's hourglass is still running. Face the truth now, before the consequences arrive on their own.

Reversed in career

In career readings, the reversed Justice card can warn of unfair treatment, office politics, or a legal matter tipping against you. It may also point to cutting corners or avoiding blame for an error. Act with integrity even if others won't, document everything, and own your part. The scales tend to right themselves in time.

Reversed in money

Reversed, this card warns of financial dishonesty or imbalance: a contract with hidden terms, a dispute over money owed, or debts you've been avoiding. Read the fine print, keep records, and settle what you owe before it grows.

As feelings

They feel guilty, evasive and out of balance. They may know they haven't been fair with you but aren't ready to admit it.

As an action

Restore balance. Stop avoiding consequences. Someone in this position may avoid consequences, bend the truth, or blame others for their own choices.
