The Fool, in our words

The Fool is a classically misunderstood card that carries significant value to those who know its true meaning. The number on this card is zero, which represents boundless possibilities and potential. Although The Fool does not have a specified position within the order, we have chosen to place him at the beginning of our Major Arcana deck because we see him as a blank canvas. He represents new beginnings, serving as the picture of optimism and naivete.

In this image, a ghoulish court jester dances atop a precarious summit, striding unknowingly toward the edge of a precipice. Unaware of the perilous circumstances that threaten him, he is blind to the physical remains of those who succumbed to the relentless wilderness before him; they serve as an example of where this path leads.

In one hand, he carries his modest bag of belongings; he is a figure of simplicity, unencumbered by the weight of worry or regret. In his other hand, he holds a single white rose, which represents his innocence and purity. At his feet, a white dog acts as his companion, signified by their matching costumes. He represents loyalty and protection, barking to caution The Fool lest he fall headfirst into danger. In the background of this scene, we see a mountain range. This sierra symbolizes the challenges that our protagonist will inevitably face. Still, the jester does not seem to notice or care as he makes his way forward.

Though he can be irresponsible and careless, The Fool is an adventurous spirit who carries a zeal for life. This card reminds us that we should maintain a balance between excitement and wariness when setting forth on our ventures and opportunities.

▲ Upright

The Fool upright meaning

Love	A fresh start, a fearless first move, or falling for someone unexpected.
Career	A new job, a new venture, or the nerve to change direction.
Money	New opportunity, as long as you look before you spend.
Feelings	Excitement, wonder, openness
Action	Leap. Begin. Trust the path.

Upright in love

In a love reading, The Fool asks you to open your heart the way the jester opens his arms to the night air. If you are single, a new connection may arrive when you least expect it, and it may look nothing like your usual type. If you are in a relationship, this card invites play back into it: a spontaneous trip, a new tradition, a fresh chapter you begin together. Keep the white rose in mind. Go in with an open heart, not a careless one.

Upright in career

The Fool often appears at the edge of a new path: a first job, a career change, a business you've been afraid to start. The mountains behind the jester are real, and so are the challenges ahead, but this card says the time is right to take the first step. Bring your curiosity, travel light, and learn as you go.

Upright in money

Money under The Fool carries both promise and risk. A new source of income or an unexpected opportunity may appear. The bones at the jester's feet remind you that others have fallen here before, so do your research before you leap and keep a little set aside in your bundle.

As feelings

Full of excitement, wonder and openness. They feel a spark and want to see where it leads, even if they haven't thought about the details yet.

As an action

Leap. Begin. Trust the path. A person shown by The Fool acts on instinct. They say yes first and plan later.

▼ Reversed

The Fool reversed meaning

Love	Moving too fast, chasing the thrill, or holding back out of fear of the fall.
Career	Jumping without a plan, or staying stuck because change feels too risky.
Money	Impulse spending and risky bets. Read the fine print.
Feelings	Anxiety, naivety, regret
Action	Pause. Assess. Reconsider.

Reversed in love

Reversed, The Fool can point to a relationship that is moving too fast, or a partner who loves the thrill of the chase more than what comes after it. It can also mean you are holding back from love because you fear the fall. Ask yourself whether you are being careless with your heart, or too careful to use it at all.

Reversed in career

In career readings, the reversed Fool warns against jumping without a plan: quitting before you're ready, signing before you've read, or drifting between projects without finishing any of them. If you've been stuck, it can also mean that fear of change is keeping you on familiar ground. Pause and look at the path before your next step.

Reversed in money

Reversed, this card is a warning about impulse purchases, risky bets and money decisions made on a whim. Look at the remains on the summit. Check your budget, read the fine print, and wait a day before any big purchase.

As feelings

They feel anxious, naive or full of regret. They may wish they hadn't moved so quickly, or feel lost about where things are heading.

As an action

Pause. Assess. Reconsider. Someone in this position may be acting recklessly, or avoiding a decision altogether.
