The World card description

What's on the card

On the steps of a gothic church, Dr. Jekyll steps back in fear from a swirling purple portal made of potion, a vial in his hand. Mr. Hyde, in a top hat and holding a cane and an empty bottle, emerges on the other side. Stone gargoyles of a lion, a bull, a cherub, and an eagle surround them.

From the Terror Tarot guidebook

The World, in our words

At the completion of our journey is The World. We felt that the tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde suited the narrative beautifully and made for a compelling visual story. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde are in the midst of transition due to a central ingredient — the elixir. The hesitant scientist takes a step back, signifying the existence of wariness and the need for reflection as we move forward on our path, though it is his curiosity and ambition that continues to inspire our subject to accomplish his goal. By ingesting the potion, Dr. Jekyll travels through the circle and passes over into a new phase as Mr. Hyde. Holding the now-empty potion bottle, we see a man who has fully explored the dark depths that Jekyll found so riveting. His grotesque and disheveled appearance represents the trials and tribulations we may encounter on our journey. The circular shape of the potion portal reflects the cycle of accomplishments, endings, and new beginnings.

Beyond the portal, a church door looms above the men, seemingly partitioning the two into good and evil but also serving as an obstacle to Jekyll. The stairway appears to lead to the church entrance, but the doctor has discovered a doorway of his own. Societal and religious pressures of Victorian England shackled the pursuit of his intentions. Though Jekyll surrendered to his desires, he was ultimately repressing his true inner self. The ambiguity of this outcome leaves the interpretation open as to which character personifies good and which one personifies evil.

Circling the transformation, we see four gargoyles — a lion, a bull, a cherub, and an eagle — similar to those found in Wheel of Fortune. These four figures represent the four fixed signs of the zodiac — Leo, Taurus, Aquarius, and Scorpio respectively. They also symbolize the four elements, the four suits of the Minor Arcana, and the four corners of the universe. Their presence is meant to bring balance to our journey from one phase into the next.

▲ Upright

The World upright meaning

Love	Wholeness and commitment. A relationship reaches a milestone, or you feel complete.
Career	A goal achieved and a chapter finished. Recognition, and the next door opens.
Money	Financial goals met. A long effort finally comes full circle.
Feelings	Wholeness, fulfillment, integration
Action	Integrate all parts of yourself.

Upright in love

In love, The World speaks of wholeness. Like Jekyll and Hyde passing through the same portal, it asks you to accept every side of yourself and your partner, the light and the shadow alike. Couples may reach a milestone such as marriage, a move or a long-awaited reunion. If you are single, you feel complete on your own, and that self-assurance draws the right people in.

Upright in career

For your career, The World marks the finish line of a long climb: a degree earned, a project delivered, a goal you've chased for years. Celebrate it. The four gargoyles keeping watch remind you that balance carried you here. This card can also point to travel or work that spans borders. When you're ready, a new cycle begins.

Upright in money

Money under The World comes full circle. A loan is paid off, a savings goal is reached, or an investment matures. The swirling portal shows that every ending feeds the next beginning, so decide what this success will fund next. It is a good time to review the whole picture and plan the coming chapter.

As feelings

They feel wholeness, fulfillment and integration. With you, they feel at home in their own skin, as if every part of them finally fits.

As an action

Integrate all parts of yourself. A person shown by The World finishes what they start and accepts every part of themselves, flaws included.

▼ Reversed

The World reversed meaning

Love	Something unfinished lingers. Fear of commitment, or old baggage blocking closure.
Career	So close to the finish, yet stalled. Delays, shortcuts or one step left untaken.
Money	A goal that keeps slipping away. Tie up loose ends before starting anything new.
Feelings	Imposter syndrome, frustration, unfulfilled potential
Action	Finish what you started. Release indecision.

Reversed in love

Reversed, The World suggests a love story that hasn't found its ending. You may be holding back part of yourself, or a relationship may feel stuck one step short of commitment. Like Jekyll shrinking from the portal, fear of change can keep you on the wrong side of the threshold. Name what remains unfinished and decide whether to complete it or close it.

Reversed in career

In career readings, the reversed World points to a goal that is nearly done but stalled. Delays, a missing final step, or a sense that you don't deserve the success can all keep you from crossing the line. Avoid shortcuts that skip the real work. Finish the last task, ask for the recognition you've earned, and let the cycle close.

Reversed in money

Financially, this card reversed often shows loose ends: a debt you keep meaning to clear, paperwork left half done, or a plan that never quite gets finished. Small gaps add up. Before you chase a new opportunity, close out what you already started. The circle only completes once you walk all the way through.

As feelings

They feel imposter syndrome, frustration and unfulfilled potential. They sense something more is possible but can't quite reach it, and that gap weighs on them.

As an action

Finish what you started. Release indecision. Someone under the reversed World may hesitate at the threshold, starting new things before the old ones are done.
