The High Priestess, in our words

The High Priestess is a powerful female figure within the Major Arcana. She is a symbol of intuition, unattainability, and mystery. We chose the infamous Medusa to represent her as she, too, is an emblem of all the aforementioned qualities.

Medusa is seated on a throne made of the stony corpses of her fallen foes. These statues are forever cemented in a purgatory-like state, confined between life and death but also acting as the physical veil that conceals what lies beyond. The gorgon’s contact with her throne serves as a symbol of her connection to the subconscious and conscious minds. Her womanly beauty signifies her intuition, fertility, and femininity while her monstrous ferocity embodies her divinity. Her gaze fends off the casual passersby, defending herself and her secrets with dignity and strength. Literally facing her challenges head-on, she encourages us to pursue truth; the world is not always what it seems.

Her throne sits between two pillars marked with the Greek letters “Π” and “ά.” These are the first letters in the Greek spellings of Persephone and Hades. Antitheses of one another, their relationship characterizes the unification of dualities: feminine and masculine, darkness and light, spiritual and material. Medusa’s position between the pillars suggests that she is a moderator of balance within these two planes of existence. She understands the importance of both pillars for the sake of knowledge and survival.

Born of the sea gods Phorcys and Ceto, Medusa’s divinity depicts her sacred awareness and rule over her dominion. She holds the blindfold of Themis, Goddess of Justice, portraying her grasp on the universal constitution. In order to move beyond Medusa and the conscious mind into the subconscious, we must obtain a greater understanding of divine law by donning the blindfold and gaining spiritual insight. Her tail curls into a crescent-shape, similar to that of a waxing crescent moon. This further symbolizes her relation to the feminine and the natural cycles of the moon and seasons.
