The Empress, in our words

The Empress is the maternal figure of the Major Arcana and an exemplification of fertility and femininity. Therefore, we felt that a sexy, seductive vampiress was the embodiment of a terrifying matriarch. In this card, her chaise lounge doubles as her throne from which she derives her power, as seen by her confident posture and commanding gaze. She sits in an open landscape as twelve stars assemble in the night sky to form her crown. This celestial constellation symbolizes her connection to the natural order of the universe. The running river, twisted trees, and blood of her enemies empower the matron, as portrayed by her proximity to nature.

The seductive manner of her body, accompanied by the symbol of Venus around her neck, suggests that this vampiress possesses characteristics of feminine fertility and sexuality. This is further signified in the red shade of the chaise on which she sits. The Empress is a leader associated with abundance and harvest. The skulls at her feet represent a recent and bountiful reaping by the femme fatale. She brings blessings and provides for herself as well as those she presides over by using her many womanly virtues. In her right hand, she holds an orb-shaped glass filled with the blood of her most recent victim. Her drink reinvigorates her vitality, alluding to her ability to be nourished by nature and the beings that reside within it.

Upright in love

The Empress is one of the most loving cards in a reading. She brings warmth, desire and devotion, the kind of romance that feels like being fully seen. If you are single, your confidence and sensuality are magnetic right now; let yourself enjoy being wanted. If you are in a relationship, expect closeness to deepen. This card can also signal pregnancy or a new chapter of family life.

Upright in career

In career, The Empress favors creative work, caregiving roles and any project you have poured yourself into. Ideas you have been nursing are ready to grow. She rules from her chaise, not by force but by magnetism, and people come to her. Make your workspace somewhere you enjoy being, trust your creative instincts, and let your work reflect your own taste.

Upright in money

Financially, The Empress signals comfort and abundance. Like the skulls heaped at the Vampiress's feet, a harvest is coming from what you have patiently tended. Enjoy it without guilt, but keep planting. Spending on quality, beauty and well-being is favored here, as long as it nourishes you rather than drains you.

As feelings

They feel sensuality, fullness and creative joy. Being with you feels nourishing to them, and they want to care for what you share.

As an action

Create. Nurture. Embrace abundance. A person shown by The Empress gives generously, creates freely, and tends to the people and things they love.

▼ Reversed

The Empress reversed meaning

LoveSmothering, clinging, or losing yourself while caring for someone else.
CareerCreative block, burnout, or work that no longer feeds you.
MoneyOverspending for comfort, or relying on others to stay afloat.
FeelingsEmptiness, stagnation, longing
ActionRelease dependency. Reconnect with creativity.

Reversed in love

Reversed, The Empress can point to love that has fallen out of balance. One partner may be smothering or dependent, or you may be giving so much that nothing is left for yourself. It can also show insecurity, neglect or a relationship that has stopped growing. The Vampiress feeds herself first. Rebuild your own sense of worth before you pour more into someone else.

Reversed in career

In career readings, the reversed Empress suggests creative block, burnout or a project that has stopped growing. You may be caring for everyone's work but your own, or waiting for approval before you create. Step back, rest, and find what inspires you again. Inspiration rarely returns on command, but it does return to those who make room for it.

Reversed in money

With money, this reversal warns of spending to fill an emotional gap, or leaning on others for stability you could build yourself. It can also show a dry spell where nothing seems to take root. Trim what drains you, protect your independence, and plant small, steady habits that can grow back into abundance.

As feelings

They feel emptiness, stagnation and longing. Something is missing for them, and they may be looking to you to fill a gap only they can fill.

As an action

Release dependency. Reconnect with creativity. Someone in this position may cling too tightly, neglect their own needs, or stop creating altogether.
