From the Terror Tarot guidebook

The Hanged Man, in our words

A spine-chilling marionette dangles by his strings from the ceiling of an eerie, dilapidated theatre stage in our ghoulish portrayal of The Hanged Man. He hangs upside down as he looks upon the world from a fresh point of view. Despite his puppet-like facade, he maneuvers his body freely, just as other demon dolls have before him; he is entirely autonomous and has positioned himself here due to his own actions. Whether intentional or not, he is content in his present stance, alluded to by his serene face. ‘Normal’ is a relative concept to The Hanged Man; he accepts reality as it has come to be, yet actively chooses to see things from a new angle. He understands that there is no ‘right way’ to interpret this world or the situations we encounter while residing here.

Around his head, we see a spotlight cast a sort of halo against the backdrop of the curtain and stage. This symbolizes The Hanged Man’s newfound enlightenment and cognizance resulting from this new perspective. His hands are hidden from view, though we do not know whether they are tied behind his back or whether he is simply holding them there in a pose of contemplation. However, his bent leg suggests a level of comfort in his current state. Knowledge and passion have been carved into his being, signified by his blue top and red bottoms respectively. He finds balance in surrendering to both of these human pursuits. His decrepit surroundings show that he has been in this state for quite some time. He may release himself from this position at his convenience, but for the moment, he has found solace here.

▲ Upright

The Hanged Man upright meaning

Love	A pause in the relationship, or seeing your partner in a whole new light.
Career	A stall that becomes an insight. Step back and try a different angle.
Money	Hold off on big decisions. Waiting now saves you later.
Feelings	Acceptance, patience, quiet revelation
Action	Pause. Surrender. Let the stillness teach you.

Upright in love

In love, The Hanged Man asks you to stop pulling the strings. If a relationship feels stuck, forcing it forward won't help, but looking at it from your partner's side might change everything. Singles may need to let go of an old idea of what love should look like. Like the marionette, hang still for a while. The answer often arrives once you stop chasing it.

Upright in career

The Hanged Man tarot card in a career reading often appears when progress has stalled. A project is on hold, a decision is delayed, or you feel suspended between roles. Use the pause. Turn the problem upside down and look again, and you may spot an approach nobody else has tried. Sometimes a small sacrifice now buys a much better position later.

Upright in money

Financially, this card favors patience. It isn't the moment for big purchases or bold investments. Let things settle, gather information, and consider whether a change in how you think about money, rather than how much you have, is the real shift needed. Waiting is a choice too.

As feelings

Settled into acceptance, patience and quiet revelation. They feel in no rush and are seeing the situation, or you, in a way they hadn't before.

As an action

Pause. Surrender. Let the stillness teach you. A person shown by The Hanged Man waits and watches. They let go of control and look for a new angle before moving.

▼ Reversed

The Hanged Man reversed meaning

Love	A relationship in limbo. Stalling, indecision, or refusing to let go.
Career	Procrastination and delay. Stop waiting for permission and decide.
Money	Stalled finances or a decision you keep putting off. Time to act.
Feelings	Frustration, stagnation, indecision
Action	Release the delay. Make the decision. Move.

Reversed in love

Reversed, The Hanged Man shows a relationship left hanging too long. You may be waiting for a partner to change, or putting off a choice you already know you need to make. Some people hold on simply because letting go feels harder. The marionette can free himself whenever he wants. So can you. Make the decision and move.

Reversed in career

In career readings, the reversed Hanged Man points to delays that have turned into stagnation. You may be stuck in a role out of fear, waiting for the perfect moment, or resisting a change the situation is calling for. The stage is gathering cobwebs. Set a deadline, choose a direction, and take the first step.

Reversed in money

Reversed, this card warns that indecision is costing you. Bills left unopened, a plan postponed again, or money sitting idle when it could be working all fit here. Stop waiting for certainty. Make a clear choice with what you know and adjust as you go.

As feelings

They feel frustrated, stagnant and indecisive. They know something needs to change but can't bring themselves to choose.

As an action

Release the delay. Make the decision. Move. Someone in this position may stall, procrastinate, or cling to the familiar long after it has stopped serving them.
