From the Terror Tarot guidebook
The World, in our words
You are standing before a classically decorated gallery wall within a seemingly-abandoned Victorian mansion where the floorboards seem to creak too loudly and too often, and you swear you can hear the tinkling of piano keys from the cobweb-covered parlor. As you survey the hanging artwork, you begin to feel a cold chill pass through your body. Looking into the mirror, you realize that the face staring back at you is beginning to change until you’re no longer seeing your own terrified reflection but the spectral visage of this home’s sole remaining resident. Though you desperately want to run, you find that her gaze keeps you still. She begins advancing slowly toward you, and you start to question your sanity as you are certain that her hands are moving beyond the mirror’s edge, reaching out for you...
In this alternate version of The World, we see a petrifying specter passing through an ornate mirror between our world and the next. The mirror is a large oval, which signifies the cyclical nature of life, death, and all things within their grasp. So, too, does the ghostly figure herself represent this cycle as she has moved on from her corporeal form to the mysterious presence that is now looming before you.
On the wall bordering this mirrored portal, we see several pieces of art, all of which carry their own significance. In each corner hangs the image of a cherub, an eagle, a bull, and a lion; these illustrations portray Aquarius, Scorpio, Taurus, and Leo respectively. These are the four fixed signs of the zodiac, known for their ability to see things through and to stay grounded while doing so. These characters and what they represent are meant to bring balance and stability to our beautifully ghastly apparition as she passes from one realm to the other. Despite their smaller size, the remaining pictures on the wall hold a substantial symbolic weight of their own. Further signifying metamorphosis and fruition, the transformation that a butterfly undergoes parallels and encapsulates this card and its meaning. The cameo we see is a depiction of our lovely phantasm in her previous, human state. She is turned to the side, looking back at her past while her ghost moves forward into the unknown.
The World is notable for representing evolution and completion, but far more lies beneath if we further our gaze past its facade. Just as a number of secrets are held inside this mirror, they, too, are concealed within this card. In addition to signaling a season’s end, The World symbolizes a moratorium between cycles and emphasizes the significance of self-reflection before starting anew. The ghost who haunts these grounds drifts between the physical and ethereal realms. Though her mortal journey has reached its end, she takes an essential respite before moving forward into the beyond. Likewise, we should heed our own inclinations to enjoy our successes and to heal from our traumas.
A note from us
When we decided to re-release our Terror Tarot deck, we knew we wanted to include a bonus card. We are so immensely grateful for the overwhelming love and support we have received since the original release of our Terror Tarot Deck back in 2020, and we are elated to share this new design with you! The World seemed like a perfect choice, given its association with fulfillment and achievement. However, when using this deck, you should use the version of The World that resonates with you most. I personally like to use them interchangeably depending on the reading that I’m giving or the question that I’m asking. As always with tarot, let your intuition guide you.
Before moving on to how this card’s art and symbolism pertain to tarot, we would like to take a moment to set the stage. This new card is very much intended to immerse us in the scene so that we, the viewers, are actively participating in the event unfolding before us. So, please, allow a moment of suspended disbelief as you read ahead.
